When We Were Young

Remember the time when we climbed granddad’s tree stand
and found a nest of robin’s eggs.
We proceeded to crush them on the stones below
out of curiosity.

We didn’t understand the tears in mother’s eyes
when she saw the yoke on our hands.

A while back at Lisa’s place when we
smoked weed in the barn behind her house.
Our red eyes cried because we knew we were wrong
and mom was calling us home.

We finally understood the tears in mother’s eyes
when she saw the yoke on our hands.
